There is a certain comfort that comes with having pumpkins in the house. They herald the ripening of summer into autumn and conjure the warming spices of soups, lattes and muffins. Our friends ‘over the pond’ certainly know how to celebrate and appreciate the humble pumpkin and when it comes to their production, Illinois smashes the competition. Prairie State farmers grow more ornamental and canning-type pumpkins than any other state, and have done since the trade was established in the 1920s. In her design, Nichola Slaney takes us to an American ranch where sprawling pumpkins cover the fields. In the distance we see a traditional wooden barn, painted in rusty red paint.
